What the Museum Covers

What the Museum Covers

The museum interprets U.S. Army transportation from 1776 to the present. It opened to the public in 1959 in a repurposed storage building at Fort Eustis, then moved to its present six-acre site in 1976.

The collection includes just over 7,000 artifacts and more than 135 military vehicles. Rather than focusing on a single type of transport, the museum follows the changing ways the Army has moved people and equipment across land, water and air.

Vehicles and Transportation Exhibits

The museum’s displays include planes, helicopters, tugboats, landing craft, trucks, jeeps, hovercraft and trains, as well as experimental vehicles. The six-acre grounds include more than 30,000 square feet of interior exhibits, covered outdoor pavilions for rail, truck and aviation vehicles, and an outdoor marine yard.

Notable items connect transport technology with specific military settings: equipment from the World War II Red Ball Express, Korean War helicopters associated with the television series MASH, a Vietnam War gun truck and a Berlin Duty train. You can combine the indoor galleries with the outdoor displays; concrete sidewalks lead to most of the outdoor exhibits.
